Empathy (Poem), By: Jahi Flowers, Morehouse College

Today, it often feels like indifference, or the concept of not caring, is becoming a well indoctrinated philosophy.

If someone were to ask me why I believe the things that I do, I would tell them to look around and notice how numerous media outlets and social media sites enforce this belief every time they turn a blind eye to people in other countries suffering to an unjust legal system, the homeless man who looks like he hasn’t eaten in weeks, or even the black girl who’s been missing for years.

It would be safe to assume that empathy is an inherited trait that occurs naturally in the human genome but in today’s society it often feels like an acquired trait that has to be learned like riding a bike and falling a few times.
